Who We Are

GenomeTails was founded in 2025 by Dr. Jonas Donner, a geneticist with a PhD in medical genetics from the University of Helsinki, Finland. Over the past decade, Jonas has worked at the forefront of companion animal genetic testing, playing a key role in shaping how genetic information is produced and applied to improve pet health and welfare.

Jonas was instrumental in developing the so-called multi-gene panel tests — a tool that revolutionized the field by enabling breeders, veterinarians, and pet owners to screen for a wide range of inherited diseases and traits in a single test. At the same time, these panels made it possible to gather comprehensive genetic data to help manage breed diversity. His research has focused on understanding the prevalence and underlying causes of hereditary conditions in dogs and cats, with a clear mission: to translate data-driven genetic discoveries into meaningful improvements in animal health and wellbeing.

After many years in the genetic testing industry, Jonas recognized a clear gap. Although genetic data had become increasingly accessible, many pet owners, breeders, breed organisations, and veterinarians were left asking the same questions: What does this information really mean? How should I use it? Out of this need, GenomeTails was born — an independent advisory company dedicated to making pet DNA information both understandable and actionable.

At present, when we say “we” at GenomeTails, it essentially means Jonas himself — offering his expertise directly to clients. Over time, the vision is to expand GenomeTails into a broader platform of support, but at its core, the company will always remain rooted in personal, science-based guidance.

Today, Jonas works with pet owners, breeders, veterinarians, breed organisations, and industry partners around the world — providing expert guidance on everything from interpreting complex test results to making sustainable breeding and health decisions. His goal is to empower others to use genetic information responsibly and with confidence.

Outside of his professional work, Jonas and his wife breed Shetland Sheepdogs — a daily reminder of the close bond between people and their pets, and of the importance of promoting their long-term health and wellbeing.
